Agriculture has been the backbone of India’s economy. According to a study conducted by the Press Information Bureau, around 60% of Indian households depended on agriculture for livelihood in 2003. Today, this percentage has gone significantly down to 47% and accounts for 15% of the total India’s GDP.  Why this change? Agriculture took a big hit because of rapid industrialization in India, forcing many farmers to abandon their fields, gradually pushing them toward poverty and dealing with their losses. Microfinance for farmers enables them to cultivate and make a living out of it. These organizations have become critical in advancing the livelihood of these people, especially in rural areas. Microfinance in Agriculture

Microfinance in agriculture can be classified into 3 main categories :

• Crop loan – loans for purchasing crops, pesticides, farming, etc.
• Term loan for operations – loan for agricultural operations such as water resources.
• Post-harvest loan – loan for storage and trading operations.

Assisting farmers in forming JLGs

One of the common challenges faced by most of the small or marginal farmers in accessing credit from banks is the lack of collateral. Microfinance organizations are supporting these farmers by forming small groups and providing them with loans at lower interest rates. These classified groups are known as Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), created with one major principle, the group is responsible for the loan borrowed by any individual. These groups are effectively addressing the challenges of farmers in various ways by giving them access to financial services.

Providing Crop Insurance

Floods or other environmental disasters are the worst nightmares for the farmers. These incidents can destroy the crops and cause significant losses to the farmers. Microfinance in agriculture provides customized crop insurance policies to farmers based on various seasons around the year. Investing in Technology

Many microfinance companies have already started investing in technology to simplify the loan processes. Back in the day, the loan process was completely manual which consisted of filling out an application form, checking the economic transactions of the farmers’ family, etc. This procedure has delayed the loan disbursement process. Today, most microfinancing companies are using mobile applications with minimal data processing to allow faster processing of loan applications. 

Strengthening Supply Chains

Microfinance organizations can help farmers by improving the agricultural supply chain by financing transportation and storage facilities. Organizations are supporting farmers by giving them access to the latest advancements in the agricultural industry. By allowing farmers to transport, store, and use advanced tools these organizations are ensuring that the produce is reaching the market in good condition by also significantly reducing the post-harvest losses for the farmers. Some of the microfinance organizations are also offering extension services such as expertise on crops by providing insights and advice on crop management, pest control, and harvest techniques, which together lead to better crop outcomes. 

All in all, the role of microfinance in agriculture is significant as these organizations are striving to resolve the most significant challenges faced by the companies. Microfinance companies in India have been helping low-income families, individuals, and small businesses across various parts of the country in fighting against poverty. These companies also emphasize the importance of financial inclusion for women and empower them to achieve individuality and independence. The main goal of microfinance is to provide funds to people who are at the bottom of the socio-economic spectrum and help them live a modest life. 

Today many microfinance companies have set sustainable development goals for 2030 which align with the UN’s sustainable development goals(SDGs) particularly in promoting economic growth and reducing inequalities. In this blog let us discuss the progress and challenges of microfinance in sustainable development. 

Microfinance and SDGs

Microfinance financial services are crucial in achieving many of the SDGs, some of the important SDGs that align positively with the  microfinance organization’s purview of objectives are:

No poverty (SDG 1): MFI allows poor people to manage their households by providing low-interest loans which helps them manage risks and reduce the likelihood of falling into extreme poverty. 

Zero hunger (SDG 2): By providing loans to poor farmer families, microfinance is helping to increase agricultural productivity and contributing to food security, helping India achieve zero hunger rates. 

Gender equality (SDG 3): MFIs are increasingly focusing on women and helping them economically to promote gender equality and modest livelihood. 

Progress Until Now

According to the NITI discussion paper, multidimensional poverty in India has decreased from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23, i.e. 17.89 percent. This means approximately 24.82 crore people are living a poverty-free life. This is partly due to the expansion of the microfinance industry in recent times in India, but the impact of microfinance on SDGs has been significant. 

Challenges Ahead

Despite some of these achievements in empowering the poor, several challenges need to be addressed:

• Sustainability: Even after persistent efforts many MFIs still struggle to achieve financial sustainability. Most of the time they rely on subsidies or donor funds. 

• Reach: The microfinance network still struggles to reach many of the poor and marginalized groups from various parts of the country in providing its services. 

• Indebtedness: There is growing concern that borrowers might become over-indebted to MFIs because of a lack of financial literacy. 

Future of microfinance and SDGs

As we look forward to 2030, it is important to understand that MFIs have a crucial role to play in helping the poor and achieving the SDGs. However, this can only be achieved with sincere efforts and by solving the existing challenges such as sustainability, over-indebtedness, and reach. With continuous efforts and innovative ideas that allow it to reach more people, MFI can help India become a poverty-free country.

Rural women in India are restricted by many societal barriers. They lack access to many resources, services, and assets such as basic education, healthcare, infrastructure, and proper sanitation. These women struggle every day of their lives to make it to the next day, and much of their labor usually goes unnoticed. In the absence of support from traditional banks, a handful of microfinance companies have enabled rural women to be self-reliant by providing basic education. In this blog, let us understand the importance of microfinance in providing microfinance education loans for rural families. 

Importance of education

In today’s modern world, education is the only way out of poverty. Education creates more opportunities and choices for both men and women. However, it is more difficult for girls to pursue education than it is for boys. Even when girls want to study, they often lack support from their families because of traditional beliefs and lack of financial support. Here are the reasons why education is important for everybody:

Impact of microfinance in educating Indian rural girls

Many microfinance organizations usually work with funding from other companies and NGOs to effectively reach remote villages in India and provide women with basic education. Few microfinance companies have been setting up SHGs (Self Help Groups) and providing them with micro-loans offering them an opportunity for education. 

Many leading microfinance companies and NGOs are working closely together in the country to improve the literacy rate of women and provide these women with microfinance loans for education. Chaitanya, the fastest growing microfinance company in India has been helping women across various aspects to improve their lifestyles for many years now, some of our contributions include

The rural population of India, especially women mainly depends on agriculture and other small-scale businesses, and these suffer from a series of lows. According to a survey conducted by the World Bank in 2019, 1/10th of India’s population is poor. Many barriers stop these rural people from benefiting from the banking facilities. However, despite the government’s continuous measures to compete with this problem, the problem persists. Microfinance plays an important role in these situations and provides these people with more income than just survival. In this blog, let us understand the role of the Joint liability group model in microfinance through women’s collective strength. 

What are Joint Liability Groups in Indian Microfinance?

Before jumping into the role of joint liability groups in microfinance, let us understand what JLG is in microfinance. NABARD, the development bank that provides credit for the advancement of agriculture in the country, has introduced JLG(Joint Liability Groups). In the year 2004, it was introduced with the sole aim of providing non-collateral loans to low-income families to improve their standard of living. 

Role of JLG’s

• JLG primarily provides credit to low-income families who do not have any collateral to avail of loans from the banks
• Collateral-free loans by collaborations 
• To build trust among the farmers

Who is eligible?

• A group of 4 or more members, who mutually agree to take responsibility for the repayment
• Farmers who don’t have any land registered under their name
• Farmers with more than one year of farming history
• All the farmers should be in similar economic status

Women’s collective empowerment through JLGs – A few  Success Stories that transformed lives

We would like to share a few stories of financial inclusion and women empowerment through some life-changing real-life success stories. 

Four members formed a  JLG group, the members- were  Mrs. Sujatha, Mrs. Sudha, Mrs. Usha, and Mrs. Latika. This group purchased 16 Malabari goats. To protect these goats from all kinds of weather conditions they installed an ingenious shed made of bamboo and other sustainable materials. The average weight of each Malabari goat substantially increased to 15-20 kgs after one year. Each year these women collectively sold 4-6 goats and earned up to ₹30,000 by rearing these goats for both milk and meat. With this JLG group, they have successfully become financially self-reliant, and with their new income, they were able to alleviate themselves from the shackles of poverty. 

At another JLG, a group of 10 people started a tailoring business for women with a wide range of options from dresses, kurtis, blouses, churidars, salwars, and nighties for the local people and clothing stores. They took a loan of  ₹2,50,000 and agreed to pay a sum of ₹10,500 every month. Each member worked day and night and earned an average of ₹10,000. This is another success story that conveys that with its modest financial support rural Indian women can overcome their circumstances and improve their financial situation by collaborating and forming a JLG group. 

A JLG was formed by shareholders of Sreekrishnapuram Organic Farmers Producer Company Ltd. with a group of 4 people. They started this to make food products, specifically bakery items. These 4 women came together and started catering services for products like papadam, murukku, and different types of Kondattam (the traditional South Indian homemade food items). They all together took a loan amount of ₹2 lakhs and agreed to pay a sum of ₹2250 per month. They started selling ₹10,000 worth of products every week and after becoming financially sound they proved to society that they are independent and strong women who have aspirations to excel. A modest loan from their JLG group just was able to transform their lives for the better, making them financially self-reliant. 

Conclusion 

When no banks were providing loans to small-scale businesses, fostering financial inclusion microfinance with the JLG process provided collateral-free loans to low-income families, elevating them from poverty and transforming their world. 

Above cited success stories reiterate the importance of JLG microfinance and exemplify the transformative power of these JLG units in the microfinance industry. These are just 3 JLGs amongst the umpteen other stories that helped rural Indian women across the country to live financially independent lives upholding their self-esteem intact. Through continuous support and investment in these initiatives, we can catalyze a more financially inclusive future for rural women in India.

Microfinance was introduced in the 1970s from the Grameena Bank Model, since its inception it has changed the lives of many rural people by providing them with microloans. This in turn has enabled them to afford a basic livelihood that aids in income generation and community integration. The industry mainly focuses on marginalized groups of rural women, and as of 2018, more than 80% of the client base is accounted for women accounting for approximately 140 million borrowers. This analytics shows how microfinance has helped rural Indian women and enabled them to live a better life.

This has allowed NBFCs and microfinance companies to match the loans given by banks. Today, the microfinance industry contributes 35% of loans while traditional banks contribute just over 38%.

The role of digital technology

According to research conducted by the National Payments Corporation of India that assessed all the digital payments in India concluded that 25% of the people from the lower income groups of India whose income is below 1 lakh have preferred digital modes of transactions over the traditional ones. 

Integration of Aadhar into digital finance in microfinance institution services has enabled MFI to assess the liability of the borrower through digital payment tools. As of 2022, this Aadhar-enabled integration has over 1277.9 million active users. This has helped the MFIs to pace up the process speeds, reduce operational costs, and most importantly detect fraud. 

Benefits of digital Micro Finance 

• The benefit of integrating technology into MFI for approving and disbursing loans, among many other things, is this can help the companies to monitor transactions in real-time, and also assess the borrower’s credit history. 
• This also resolves issues like bookkeeping every transaction record of the customer and also reduces the need to store all the physical documents. 
• This can also help MFIs customize the loan offerings based on the credit history of the borrower the system can assist in decision-making. 
• Technology integration can also aid the borrowers in digital literacy by adding support for the local languages. This helps them understand the latest trends and the latest chatbots can provide 24-hour support to the various queries of the users.  
• This can also help in addressing long-faced challenges associated with repayment, reducing MFIs then the need for going for collections. Borrowers can now repay the loans through UPI.
• Fraud detection, one of the biggest challenges of MFI can be mitigated by integrating technology. Several technologies today can use AI/ML to detect fraud documentation and fake identities. 
• Microfinance digital technology with advanced analytics can be used to study a wide range of transactions and other data points to detect fraud in real-time. 
• MFIs can effectively communicate information regarding frauds or any updates in the interest rates of repayment time immediately and effectively with the users. This reduces the time of spreading the information. 

Impact of technology on MFIs

Significant growth in the digitization in microfinance and the affordability of the internet in India combined have allowed MFIs to develop customer-centric approaches. It has enabled paperless onboarding, disbursement, and repayment of the loans. Increased adaptability of the technology can also help MFIs to offer customized products and services based on their consumer base, by intelligently learning the necessities of the customers. Advancements in technology such as big data, AI/MI, and predictive analytics can be used by MFIs to acquire information and provide more relevant services. For instance, MFIs can customize the repayment period for a farmer by aligning it with the crop cycle, for efficient repayment solutions. This can add value and meaning to the MFIs’ goals. 

All in all, integrating technology into MFI can be beneficial for both banks and the people. It enables so many things and bridges the gap that previously existed because of traditional banking methods. This advancement can effectively improve the efficiency of MFI by allowing it to reach more people, and also in simplifying the loan process. This can support even more rural families in India by providing them with micro-loans they deserve.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

This program is launched with only one objective “financial inclusion” for all. PMJDY played a vital role in bringing rural women into the financial mainstream. This program assisted women in opening bank accounts and ensured that they had access to various financial services. 

MUDRA Yojana

The Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency (MUDRA), is one of the few financial institutions that were set up by the government of India to provide financial assistance to women entrepreneurs. This is done through 3 major categories – shishu, kishor, and tarun – the scheme offers loans at various stages of business development based on the needs of the women-led enterprises. 

National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM)

Stand-Up India

This scheme was introduced to promote entrepreneurship among scheduled castes, and tribes of women by providing bank loans for setting up greenfield enterprises.
