Poverty has been a single major factor that has been affecting our country for decades. 3. Individual retail loan

Microfinance institutions also play a key role in addressing the middle-class population of India. Most middle-class families are still struggling in India to become financially independent despite a decent lifestyle. India Micro Finance Equity Fund (IMEF): In the 2012 union budget, the government of India created an IMEF of Rs. 100 crore with the help of SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) to help increase the capital of small MFIs in many states. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana: In 2015, the Micro Units Development Finance Agency (MUDRA) and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) were launched to allow small businesses to borrow micro credit up to Rs.10 lahks without collateral. These loans were given with the help of MFIs and other member institutions, which were refinanced by MUDRA Ltd.

Even after years of generational biases, there have always been trailblazing women in every generation in our country. Women who stood strong, and inspired other women to become leaders, and most importantly independent. From fighting for basic legal rights and the right to vote in the 19th century to fighting societal norms and inequities in the 21st century, women in India have shown significant amounts of perseverance and leadership skills. They might not be financially strong, but they are certainly strong-willed and independent. Most of the women from poor backgrounds don’t lack confidence, they only lack the financial support to get them started and going.

Microfinance institutions are filling this gap by providing rural women in India with basic financial support and helping them take their first step towards financial independence. India boasts the largest microcredit clientele in the world, with more than 85% of microfinance clients being women. This signifies the impact of microfinance on women’s independence, empowerment, and leadership. Thanks to MFIs, today there are Joint Liability groups led by women, which work functionally better than many private organizations.  In this blog, let us understand the impact of microfinance on women empowerment and various initiatives and steps that microfinance institutions have taken over the years to bring leaders and independent women out of their shells.

 

The journey of empowerment

Economic independence

Microfinance enables financial access to women and empowers them to take charge of their lives. By becoming economically independent, these women gain confidence in their ability to manage money and their families effectively. These women showcase significant amounts of confidence and perseverance and are dedicated to changing their lives and impacting others.

Social collateral

Microfinance operates purely on trust and social responsibility. Joint Liability Groups by microfinance institutions are a successful initiative, where women support each other financially, share experiences, and learn from each other. This creates a sense of community and in these circles, the leadership emerges organically.

For instance, a woman who has successfully established her tailor business becomes the inspiration for other women in the community.

Breaking social norms

By offering micro loans to economically backward women, microfinance is allowing them to break the social norms and become leaders of their own communities. This communal advantage allows them to grow together and benefit mutually.

 

How microfinance has allowed women to become independent?

Apart from financial aid, the impact of microcredit is enabling women in decision-making, developing various skills, and managing financials.

SHGs

SHGs are informal associations, consisting of 4-10 individuals to help each other financially. These groups primarily focus on savings, credit, and mutual support.

• SHGs work majorly on trust, through regular meetings and interactions, these women develop social networks and build leadership qualities.
• These connections will help them build self-confidence and a sense of belonging.
• In India, over 12 million SHGs exist, with 88% being women-led, These groups serve approximately 142 million families, contributing to economic resilience and leadership development.

JLGs

JLGs are informal groups of 4-10 people, who usually avail loans by taking the responsibility of repayment together without collateral.

• These groups promote collective responsibility and mutual guarantee, which are two of the important qualities of leadership.
• Research shows that women in JLGs exhibit risk-taking behaviour and innovation in women.

Retail loans

Retail loans or microloans are small amounts of loans for short tenures without any collateral.

• These retail loans empower women to invest in income generating activities, making them financially independent and strong.
• MFIs by providing access to these microloans are offering women greater control over financial resources making them leaders of their families, and inspiration for others.

Microfinance is playing a key role in shaping the lives of women across various parts of our country. MFIs have been equipping underprivileged women with access to financial services by implementing customized and accessible schemes and policies. According to a study by the Microfinance Institutions Network(MFINs), more than 60 million Indian women currently hold small, collateral-free loans through microfinance institutions. These loans have helped more than 300 million families in the country to achieve financial independence and lead a stable and healthy lifestyle. This blog demonstrates the role of microfinance in helping women build sustainable businesses. It also discusses various initiatives by MFIs that are helping women establish a stable lifestyle.

Why are microfinance companies targeting women?

Women have been facing significant gender inequalities since the beginning, especially in the financial sector. This is due to many factors such as limited access to education, lack of proper documentation of collaterals, and also due to lack of financial support. According to a study by the International Labour Office Geneva, more than 70% of the world’s poor population are women. This data signifies room for improvement, which is why most of the MFIs are specifically targeting women, leading them to financial independence.

Key Initiatives of Microfinance 

MFIs in India have been successful in empowering women entrepreneurs and supporting their businesses by providing microloans or other financial products. Here are some of the key initiatives that have been successful in shaping the future of many women across the country:

1. Joint Liability Groups

Most of the MFIs provide collateral-free loans through the JLG model. They typically contain 4-10 individuals and operate on the principle of joint liability, where the members of the group collectively take the responsibility for the repayment. These groups have significantly helped women in achieving economic empowerment by providing loans for establishing businesses.

2. Collateral free loans

Collateral-free loans allowed MFIs to reach the underprivileged population of India, especially women. Most of the women lack proper documentation and do not have properties registered under their names. This makes it difficult for women to access financial assistance. MFIs have been targeting women of these kinds, from various parts of the country and enabling financial assistance. As of March 2023, there are a total of 6.64 crore low-income women clients across 729 districts in India who have availed of 12.96 crore active loans through MFIs.

3. Self Help Groups

Unlike JLGs, Self Help Groups operate on the principle of savings. These groups typically consist of 10-20 members, who combine deposit amounts into one savings account. The loan disbursement depends on the amount of savings and the lender loan is done in the name of SHG, not the individual. These groups are allowing women from poor backgrounds to have financial assistance to start their own businesses.

4. Non Financial services

Apart from traditional banking or financial services, many MFIs have been working closely with women in rural India to offer non-financial services. These institutions have been offering literacy and business training programs to underprivileged women. Educating these women is allowing them to climb up the ladder and understand basic financial literacy. This is enabling women to start new business ventures and attain financial independence.

NBFCs (Non-Banking Finance Companies) are registered and licensed organizations that provide banking services without holding a bank license. The main goal of these institutions is to make financial services such as loans, investment plans, and insurance accessible to underserved people mostly across the rural parts of the country. CFSS is a regulatory mandate issued by the Reserve Bank of India for NBFCs to streamline the financing processes using advanced technologies to provide more efficient, risk-free, and transparent financial services to the people. Some of the important guidelines of this mandate are:

• NBFCs operating with 10 or more branches are obliged to implement Core Banking Solution (CBS) as a part of CFSS.
• CBS involves adopting one single centralized system to manage every financial service across all the branches.
• CFSS adoption is not mandatory for NBFCs with less than 10 branches. However, it is advised to consider implementing it into systems. 

Note: The deadline for integrating CFSS into existing systems for the upper and middle-layered NBFCs is September 30, 2025. 

Benefits of CFSS

Integrating CFSS into the database has its own benefits, some of which are:

5Cs of Credit

The 5Cs of credit in microfinance are used by microfinance institutions as an eligibility criterion for assessing the creditworthiness of potential borrowers. This strategy allows microfinance institutions to serve people better, improve their lifestyles, and also reduce the risk of financial loss to the lender.

1. Character

The character of a borrower is evaluated based on his previous credit history, borrowing behavior, timely repayments, collection accounts, and bankruptcies. Microfinance institutions evaluate borrowers’ key attributes such as reputation, integrity, and readiness to repay the loan.
